MLB Postseason Predictions

Was she better or worse than Chris Wheeler? Jamie Moyer?
Probably better than Moyer because he was brutal, he knows the game but he was just terrible at when to jump in etc. I always liked Wheeler. He knew the game and did a good job. I'll take him over Stairs or Davis.

She did a handful of Sunday night MLB games leading up to this. Basically took over for Schilling when he got suspended..... Which I think is an upgrade.

Yeah. Nothing like replacing a guy who pitched for 20 years with a softball player.....

There are people that played the game that are good and there are others that suck. I've listened to her broadcast a few games and didn't think she was bad. Schilling was obviously a great pitcher, I don't enjoy listening to him cover a game.

This raises the question... what does the ideal color commentator bring to the game? For me, it's a few inside details about strategy, but mostly just admiration of good plays and trashing sh*tty play. I like what Troy Aikman brings too the table. He's dumb as a rock, but he gets a little out of pre-game talks with the teams, shares a little from his high caliber experience. But mostly he's just emphasizing what's going on.

Last night felt like I was watching a Little League World Series game. A game of who's starter is better. Not really a fan.

That is a great question and it is a topic my friends and I have debated frequently. Intelligence is not necessarily needed. Being a good guy probably is a requirement, but being a good guy doesn't necessarily mean you can be a good color guy.

I do agree about Troy Aikman. Unlike pretty much everything else on fox, he isn't over the top. He takes his job seriously and keeps it simple.

3-0 Cubs in the 3rd. Stick a fork in this one. Road teams wins another one game playoff. Goofy sport, man.

Anyone find the game tonight more visually attractive than last night's game? Feel the color is brighter and the camera angles are closer to the action. I don't think it is a TBS - ESPN thing, more of a PNC vs Yankee Stadium thing.

Fowler killing the Pirates - 4-0 now

This game was over at 1-0.

Arrietta has been a monster since moving to the NL (and getting on the sauce).

It doesn't help the ump is calling pitches 3 inches off the plate. Both ways but he's awful.

Adp - agree on balls and strikes - very interesting zone tonight, but has gone both ways

Traded Arrieta for Scott f'n Feldman. Just a criminal trade, even if Arrieta wasnt living up to his immense billing. There was no way Baltimore was going to win that trade. Arrieta still had a ceiling. Feldman is a #5 starter eternally.

That trade is incredible looking back
But I remember at the time opinions were pretty split on who was making out better. Arrieta had been brutal for the O's, amazing how far he's come.

Killer DP there (although McCutchen's hit looked like a DP too)

Pirates have some great fans. Agree it looks like an unbelievable atmosphere. Very cool to be in a ballpark when it's jumping in this manner. Pirates need to do something. That DP was a nut punch.

Two mopes like Folwer and Schwarber proved to be the undoing last night. They had 5 of the 6 cub hits.

Major cap tip to Arrieta. Not only did he dominate with 11 k's and 0 walks, he managed to insight a bench clearing incident (or whatever you want to call it) by throwing at guys.

During Marte's at bat (when he grounded into the double play), that was as loud as it gets at a sporting event.

There is not ample time for a 3 game set. MLB has to hold the Monday after the regular season in the event there is a tie-breaker. You cannot reasonably ask teams to play Tues-Thurs with travel and then turn around and travel again on Friday for LDS.
they do it all the time in the regular season. they can play up to 18 straight days. why can't they play 4 or 5 straight in the playoffs? what i'd propose but would never happen in a million years is 3 game series in 2 days. day 2 if it's tied at 1 play a 2nd game for it all. play all 3 games in the team with the better records stadium. one game wild card is stupid.

The best way to go is the way they do it now. Logistically speaking there really isn't another good option. Monday has to be held. That leaves Tues-Thurs. You're not doing a 3 game set in those three days, especially if you had a team in a play-in game on Monday. The schedule simply doesn't enable another realistic scenario without completely screwing the wildcard teams. The one game scenario is awesome. It rewards the division winners but doesn't blow out the wildcards. Last year we had two wildcards in the World Series. You want that possibility because at the end of the season those two teams were playing great baseball. Take emotion out of it and just look at the calendar.

don't you think the Pirates would rather play 3 games and travel in those 3 days than play 1 game and lose to a stud pitcher? As I said above they can play up to 18 straight days in the regular season you telling me they can't play 4 or 5 straight in the playoffs? it's baseball. they are used to playing that many games in that many days even in different cities.

another thing I don't like is that MLB set it up so all the games sunday started at the same time so no one got an extra advantage...then for the wild card gave the Cubs and Bucs an extra day. Don't you think the Pirates would have had a better shot with less day for Arrieta?

No, the Pirates had a one game playoff at home. After the fact I"m sure they'd like 2 of 3. However, the Cubs didn't just get placed into the playoffs. They won their way in and were able to set up their rotation. Their best best the Pirates best. Therefore, they advance. That's why you play the games. You think we should have a double-header and then have a team travel the next day to begin a playoff series. That's silly. There is no "perfect". Someone is always going to complain. MLB has to account for ties and travel days. You don't a team beginning your playoffs traveling 3 times and playing in 4 straight days while the opposing team sits home. That's not a realistic option.

Starting pitchers vs the Pirates the last two years in the wild card game:

18 ip, 0 r, 1 bb, 2 hbp, 21k

They would also need to renegotiate with the players union. Right now the limit is 184 games (162, 2 tie breaking games, WC game, 5 game series, 7 game series, 7 game series)

They played 19 times this season. Cubs went 11-8, including 6-4 at PNC. No reason to believe a 3- or 5- game series would change the result, the more complete, better managed team won.

Two exciting games yesterday. Cubs bats have been incredible. Schwarber. Bryant. Baez. Soler. Every day is another young guy coming up huge.

Great to see Kershaw pitch his tail off. Aside from the Murphy homer was pretty much dominant all night. Greinke vs deGrom for game 5 is about as good as it gets.
