Nick Ryan (NY) just committed to Syracuse. Makes sense since I believe his HS,Fayetteville-[/B]Manlius, is in the Syracuse area? Whitecat?

Recruiting and signings have begun. Hope VU is in the hunt. The men are close to having a superior middle distance squad. Thus Malone and Cheserek (we are allowed to dream ...) would fit nicely. The women ...? Aside from Akande and Lipari, I don't know; although I like Neutts. The first-year women, Piccirillo and Margey, may be the answer. So the women need a lot. Fortunately there are some good ones that fit the VU mold. But that is another post.

sebastianic,

We were never in the hunt for Ryan since he never listed us, but he seems to be
one with both speed and range. Does it make a difference that Cheserek might be two years
older than kids in his grade? Specifically what is the problem with Angel P?

FM's become what Saratoga used to be and taken it to another level. You have to wonder if su flip to a distance oriented program (no past history?) is in part driven by what's happened in upstate NY hs?

As usual Nova has to take on the academic powerhouses and the weather campuses. FSU is another place that seems to have become a legit top-5 program just on the strength of climate to attract top I'nl talent.

So far I like Taylor Driscoll at Sara and Jill FAnning at FM (though I don't think she's raced yet). Caterina Rocha (Ma) has strong bc ties so I don't think she'd be in the picture.
I also think the Bos and the Maier twins in Mich. should get visits if possible.

I can think of a few I'nl runners I'd like to go after: love to get Aldershot's Emilia Gorecka to xfer but that may be a reach.

Injury- unspecified

Jill Fanning (Fayetteville-Manlius) has already been to Villanova's campus on a recruiting visit. Taylor Driscoll (Saratoga Springs) has not. Mile Split has Fanning ranked as the #5 cross country runner in the nation, with Driscoll listed as "honorable mention" (see link). Villanova already has team members from each high school: Courtney Chapman (F-M) and Amanda Borroughs (SS).

MileSplit's List of Top HS Girls in Cross Country

When Angel P.doubled at the PIAA last year didn't the same girl finish second in both races; she
might be worth a look. I think her name is Kennedy Weisner

There was a big story in the Syracuse paper this morning about the
F. M. XCountry programs which has two teams: one of forty boys and one of forty
girls. They ran only duals in September with no invitationals since so many runners
were making college trips. Tomorrow they will run their best teams at Vanny for a big
invitational and two other teams at the Tully invitational. That Tully run will include teams
that didn't get invites to Vanny.

F M is a very wealthy suburban district with a girl's tennis team which I think has won
200 straight dual meets. How in the hell can Artis can forty girls to push themselves
for distance running to be that good?

Driscoll listed as "honorable mention"? I really don't care much about ratings and this early they don't mean that much. Everybody knows who the real select kids are they've probably been to Nike champ in July.
?? I look for different things besides 800/1500 times and the talent to follow a tough 5k pace. I don't think the #1 prospect A-L Neale is going to be that good a college runner. That's not a knock because I'm sure she's worked hard to get where she is. And I'd take her if she wanted to come to my program. But I look at body type and the ability to surge? as two factors of a recruit's ability that really matter at the Div.1 level (Esp for women).

?? I like Julia Bos (nationally). I think she's --and Ashley Erba-- better than several touted prospects (like Neale,Finn). We'll see if Driscoll gets to the top of the Eastern CC? is she better than Fanning (we know she's faster)

?? The Cal-Poly girl who won at UWis today was not a particularly heavily recruited prospect and while I probably heard or read about her (in passing) I couldn't even recall her name when I read about her?? She could be an early NCAA fav' (love the thin runners with quick turnover).

?? One thing about the great success at FM. It doesn't mean the school's full of blue-chippers. It just has the depth nobody eese can match ( hence they win). If you can get a few dozen kids to begin working out --under supervision-- in the middle schools you are going to produce some good runners. We have a upscale school near me that does similar things but nowhere near the numbers of FM.

Emma Keenan Gwynedd Mercy Academy she has Villanova on top of her list

400-- 54.5 800- - 2:07

The Weisner girl that I mentioned in a previous post is only a junior.
I think in the Eastern States she ran the second fastest time to
Cain. It will be interesting to see how she develops.

I believe Jillian Fanning might have a little more "speed" than is listed. Apparently ran 2:10+ leg on winning 4x800 at indoor championships.

Another young woman to notice is Regan Anderson (Tatnall, DE) - 58.7, 2:10.9, 4:40.7 (1500). She is winning a lot of XC meets. Recall, however, that her teammate, from last year - Haley Pierce - chose G'town. Anderson has more speed. Delaware is VU territory.

Anderson is the real deal, just like Pierce. Their HS program is very good and has produced a number of good girls in last 5 years. Only DE girl that Nova has gotten recently is Meghan Smith.

Georgetown just got a commitment from Stefanie Kurgatt of Florida.

PRs
800: 2:10.49
1500: 4:40.34
1600: 4:49.62
2 mile: 12:21.93
3000: 10:33.58
5000: 17:47.62

Her MileSplit page is linked below.

Anyone care to speculate on the effect on recruiting of Blincoe going leaving Nova and returning to New Zealand.
Villanovarunning has the stories.

Jillian Fanning will go to Providence. A few weeks ago I mentioned the girl who finished second to
Angel P. in last year's PIAA . She is only a junior and may have come up big yesterday.

'90,

Last week PaTrack and Cross Country did a big feature on Kennedy Weisner and chronicled
the success she has had this season. She has finished either first or second in many big invitationals.
I am guessing she didn't run in the PIAA.

As an aside, Coyle from LaSalle College High School whose name has appeared on this board did not run well
at States.

I saw that he got 11th or something like that.. My brother was at the PIAA meet in Hershey, his kid finished 100th in the big school meet. I haven't gotten a report on it from him yet.

But I have a feeling that the course conditions were very bad. Hershey got about 6 inches of rain from Sandy and they run 6 different races with about 200 kids per race on it that day with the big school boys race being last. It had to be a mudpit by that point.

Washington on its way to a very big year with Knight and Neale. They supposedly have had a few other high profile visits.

Michigan could look very strong too if they get the Meier twins and Julia Bos (prob less likely) to go with Finn.

Rumors have Catarina Rocha going to BC and Wesley Frazier to Duke?

It's hard to say who the best Ind. really is but a few meets in the next few weeks should begin to sort things out. I don't think the upcoming Nov. NLOI day applies to T&F/CC. I believe that one is in Feb. so all these are going to be verbals.

Pennsylvania AAA cross country runner-up Brent Kennedy, a junior at Kisci Area (PA) high school, is being recruited by Villanova. He's taken a campus visit recently. He's also taken a visit to Syracuse. Others in the mix are Notre Dame, Virginia, Virginia Tech. He's got a 15:27 PR at 5000 meters.

An article is linked.

Kennedy recruiting article

After XC regionals, general sense is that women's distance soph class is not that strong. There are no Lipari's, Akande's or Reid's. Someone make me feel more positive... Thus, women's recruiting takes on an increased urgency - especially XC.

Interesting runner from St. Mary's HS in Kitchener, ON (Canada) - Jaimie Phelan. Is the top rated Canadian female in 800 (2:10.57), 1500 (4:24.04), 3000 (9:49.94) and, until this past week, top rated XC runner in Ontario. She finished 6th in the OFSSA XC Championship. She won it in 2011. Maybe she just had a bad day. The point is she is being courted by Florida St., Louisville, Michigan, Villanova and West Va. She also plays hockey and soccer.

Interesting proposition: Do you pursue the five girls who finiished ahead of Phelan or just assume she had a bad day? Note: Phellan's times are superior from 800 to 3000.

There are some outstanding young women out there. Mary Cain is not an option. Jessica Judd is probably not leaving England and I do not expect Anna Laman to leave Australia. My choice: Siofra Cleiregh-Buttner, Colaiste Iosagain school, Dublin, Ireland - 2:04.8 (800), 4:24.35 (1500). She finished second to Sarah Collins in Junior XC Champs. This was considered an upset, but Collins is apparently being thought of as a great talent, who just finished 2nd in Northeast Regional for Providence. Siofra runs lke a runner - i.e., has very nice form.

Note the talent being collected by Providence. Providence to the north and Georgetown to the south.

Note also the talent going to Florida State - even at XC. Discovered that Georgia Peel (GBR) is runnig there this year.

Annie LeBlanc is running for Oregon. Penn will be theirs. VU still might win women's DMR if it can find a decent 400 runner.

I find it kind of odd that Catarina Rocha hasn't committed to BC (they list one) yet and I'd certainly look into it. She's overpraised (another Shalane F) in Ma and underrated at MileSplit (just got into their ratings). She will run Footlocker.

I like Bos a lot in Mi and the Meier twins too?
The Eire inter-counties are coming up in the next few weeks and the Euros (in Budapest? I think) as well. Siofra C-Buttner is very young and may need another year (won't be 18 till July).

Would love to have Meier. Saw the video of her and Piccirillo at indoor championship. Would help the program immensely. As you can gather, I am not too sanguine about the women's soph class. I don't see a lot behind Lipari and Akande. Have to wait and see about Piccirillo and Margey. Women's recruiting has a certain edge to it when seen in that light.

I would imagine Meier and Cleirigh-Buttner are about the same age... Sign both and VU is cooking.

Remember Meier has a twin sister. Do they come as a pair? Better fit, if they want to stay together, would be Michigan. Sister does not warrant any athletic monies.

Interesting wrinkle regarding Sydnee Over (CT). Guess who the coach is? Celeste Halliday-Over. Does that improve VU's chances of winning the affections of the daughter?

Sydnee Over: "Looking at colleges now, including UConn, Notre Dame, University of Virginia, Florida State and Texas A & M."

I don't remember if new recruit Julie Williams / Tatnall been mentioned? Finished #18 @ NXN/SE. She is getting a boat ?? (must have missed 11/10? commit: #2 D2 CC ).Foot Locker (Regionals)and Irish IC's on Sat.

Hannah vs.Haley Meier:http://mi.milesplit.com/athletes/compare/1079408+1079410

Julie v.H.Meier

Katie Brislin - Fayetteville Manlius - Committed?

Sara Sargent - Pennsbury -Maybe?

I like that Gina signed a Tatnall girl. Tatnall is the running powerhouse in DE, they have produced serious studs in the last 5 years, Bottorff/Anderson/Pierce. Be nice if Gina could make inroads in that program for the future.

Recent signings:

Jillian Fanning (Fayetteville-Manlius) to Providence

Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Spring) to Providence

Nick Ryan (Fayetteville-Manlius) to Syracuse

Nate Gordon (Spartanburg, SC) to Georgetown

Some mixed results between the two postseason races. I'm thinking about a concensus top ten for Srs. and there are a few left unsigned but they prob know what they want to do and will likely commit after Christmas.

Rome--Jr-- did pretty well @FL 19

Siofra C-Buttner finished something like 36th in atrocious conditions at the Euro champs.
Hearing G'town is pushing hard for Rocha --after losing S.Chase to Stanford--who were top-10 at FL.
