Recruiting for 2013 - General

Good. Gina isn't going to sell these girls a bill of goods like the perennially under performing coaches at Stanford et al. Villanova doesn't have the huge indoor facilities, nor will it contend for national titles, but to quote Donnie Walsh: "Don't be discouraged, but they have nothing ... and everything you need"

I don't know if D'Nova was referring to anyone specifically. There is an outstanding 400 runner - Christian Brennan (52.7) - but I doubt VU is pursuing her. Based on the 2012 results, Jaimie Phelan seemed to be the best prospect. VU was one of the schools she was looking at. See post above. She has committed to Michigan. The surprise in the XC season has been Gabriela Stafford. Lots of improvement over 2011; passing all of her rivals. Won OFSAA (Ontario) XC championship (Phelan won in 2011) and finished 4th in the national junior XC championship. Note: Phelan finshed 6th and 17th respectively. Stafford's father was some sort of XC or track champion in Canada. Good bloodlines ...? Stafford's track numbers: 2:12.8 (800), 4:35 (1500). Has she improved that much? One thing that might be in her favor is that she appears to attend an "independent" institution (Toronto French - high academic standards), which appears to be the equivalent of US "private" school. Think Michael Kerrigan. Maybe she can "afford" to attend VU? I don't see much else amongst the women.

Note; the Meier twins (MI) have committed to Duke; Sophie Chase (VA) to Stanford. It is a wonder VU is still in the conversation ... Sort of reminds one of the children story about the little engine that could.

So far, VU's best option is Emma Keenan ... unless they want to get bold and chase Jessica Judd (GBR) ....or Anna Laman (AUS)...

Siofra Cleirigh-Buttner has another year left. She is in her junior year, but she is on VU's radar. Or1on reports she finished 36th in the European Junior XC championship, but that is only 5 places behind Sarah Collins (Providence) who finshed 4th (?) at NCAAs.

The 2014 class will be exceptional. Begins with Mary Cain, but she is not alone and may not be the best.

According to villoanovarunning, Patrick Tiernan from Australia will join the team for the spring semester. In 2012, he won the under 20 championships for the 1500, 5000, 10000, and xc.

Guess VU was not at the top of Emma Keenan's list. She is going to Georgetown.

So far G'town has had a good recruiting season at middle distance. They were already way ahead in XC. And so was Providence.

Williams and Brislin are nice, but they not going to make up the difference.

More updates on recruiting. I have been informed that the two LaSalle high school guys who were on Villanova's radar -- PA 1600 meter state champion as a junior last year + all-state XC Tom Coyle and his teammate Andrew Stone -- have made college commitments. Coyle is going to Stanford, while Stone will go to Notre Dame. See the link for info about Coyle.

Is Villanova recruiting Patrick Gibson (Bellingham, WA)? Villanova is mentioned among Gibson's possible suitors in this article:

Here is his Mile Split page

I did some further digging on the Patrick Gibson question. Turns out that Villanova is indeed in the mix for this fellow; he's coming for a campus visit at the end of January (+/-). Interesting, given his location in Washington state.

I don't know if Nova was recruiting Irish Jr. Sean Tobin --3:46--but LR board is saying he commited to Ole Miss. If that sounds odd it may have to do with an Irish recruiter on staff.

SIAP, but Jaimie Phelan -- the Canadian runner coached by former Villanovan Krestina Sullivan who has been discussed above in this thread -- has committed to University of Michigan. She wanted to stay closer to home.

He signed his letter on sat. for the Ducks, then went out and broke the HS 2 mile record at Millrose. Quite a day.

Cheserek would have been icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. Malone is as good or better than him at the short distances, and Tiernan on the longer ones. We've never really seen what Cheserek can do in distances longer than 5000m except for one 10K race last year.

I'm venturing to guess that this incoming class is so small because Marcus had the luxury of red-shirting Lampron, Brennan, Warnick, and Corbusier.

Did I say that he's not?

All I said was that I'd rather have Ben Malone in shorter distances, and in the longer distances, Patrick Tiernan is vaguely equivalent to him.

Patrick Gibson (Bellingham, WA) signed with Stanford, so he's off the board. He visited Villanova in late January/early February, then inked with Stanford on February 7. Looks like he'll be a teammate of LaSalle HS's Tom Coyle, who was also briefly in play with Villanova.

Sabrina Southerland has been mentioned in these threads before. The sister of a 6'8 'cuse forward is currrently leading the 1000 i list (#2 800,#5 Mile). Brook.,NY (Cardozo) Sr. unsigned and I don't know if there's interest on VU's part although I would assume so.

TFE, I don't know about the brother. Never was that enamored of Syracuse as an intellectual bastion. Considered a "party" school.

Sabrina attends Cardozo, which is one of the better public high schools in NYC - just below Stuyvesant and Bronx HS of Science and ahead of B'klyn Tech. You take tests to get into those three.. My point: she probably has the grades. Two years ago, VU recruited Claudia Francis (Oregon), and last year Alexis Panisse (Tenn.). So I have to figure Gina and Marcus ae aware of her and Deajah Stevens. Besides they were all there in the armory for the New Balance Collegiate. Would suspect that they spoke to the young women then.

Marcus talks about the three things you need - talent, grades & money. Believe the girls have the first two, does VU have the $? And do the girls want to come to VU? Everyone in the East with grades not going to Columbia or Princeton is going to Stanford. The others go to Oregon or Florida or Florida St.

Saw a video interviewing Southerland and Stevens. You want those young women to attend VU. Came across as fine people..

I asked about the brother and apparently he isn't viewed too favorably around a few BE arenas. But sometime getting a foreign national (Ja) in school with a diff' kind of aid package can work.
Given that Sabrina hasn't commited yet I think test scores could be the problem (though IDK).

I made an error saying she went to school in Brook., (it was Queens). She's running the 800/1m double this weekend in NYC at the Nationals. She won the NY title -- 1500 -- last Sat.

In a feature on her brother in today's Syracuse
paper, he states she will make her college visits
starting next week. I wonder if we are on her list,

"especially the second sentence"
---------------------------------------------

Given she hasn't taken visits yet I was thinking it might be SAT/ACT ? as I know some conferences (BE?) don't allow paid visits without first getting a qualifying score?

The problem with waiting this long in to 2013 is that the available money may have been used elswhere. Which is why I was speculating other aid may be poss' in the case of minority or Carribean prospective student?

"I wonder if we are on her list,"
-------------------------------------------

If I were guessing I'd pick a few SEC,ACC, schools with VU a possibility if they've hung in with her.

Southerland is considering scholarship offers from Georgetown and Villanova. See link above towards the bottom.

Would love to have had Stevens as well. She's going to SC. VU needs a serious 400 runner..

Note: Southerland split 2:06+ on 4x800, this season. She also runs on the 4x400.

Lipari lives in Greenvale and Southerland lives in Floral Park. Check a map. They are about seven miles apart. Could Lipari play a role in persuading Southerland to come to VU?

Cardozo DMR

Vince Thompson, Jr. (father played at VU) will be a preferred walk-on in the Fall at RB. He will also run track. Claims a 10.7 100 in article. Is that yards or meters? Did verify that he ran 22.31 (200), last year..

Not too often that a football player at VU participates in track.

Vince Thompson, Jr

Southerland ran 2:03.22 today. That's the second fastest high school indoor time ever and faster than any Villanova woman has ever run indoors.

Post race interview with Southerland who sounds like a cute kid. I hope her visit goes well
http://www.dyestat.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=44531&mgroup_event_id=1164&do=videos&video_id=81726

Interesting that the girl that took the race out hard?for the first 600m is a MDR without a distance base (played soccer). But it looks like this talented Jr.is even a stronger student than Mary Cain so it appears. Maddy Berkson is going to be Ivy bound. Getting a visit from either may be tough.

Canadian Kailee Sawyer probably is recruitable this fall but she's listed as a '15. She looks like a big talent as well.

800 race/Sabrina

Or1on, thank for the post. Southerland comes across as a great person - just genuine, youthful joy. Hope she chooses VU. Be good for her and good for the program. Apparently she has already made her visit to VU.

In an earlier post, I pointed out that Lipari and Southerland live only about 7 miles apart. Another possible NY connection: Southerland finished 2nd to Kelsey Margey in NY 800 championship, last year. Maybe the two competitors know each other ...? Be nice.

Jamaica High School Championshhips

Last weekend, Jamaica held its HS track&field championships. Clearly it is a very big deal in the country. Might explain why they produce so many excellent runners. Believe this can all be traced to the success of three great Jamaican runners in late '40s and early '50s - George Rhoden, Arthur Wint & Herb McKenley - and their (I believe Wint and McKenley's) efforts in establishing the track program. Do a google search and you will be impressed. Would make an interesting film with the competition with the U.S. even then. Understand the 4x400 in '52 was one of the great track events. Believe Jamaica won by one-tenth sec. Mal Whitfield ran a great anchor for U.S.

One of the articles I read (you will have to do a little searching) mentioned the number of American coaches in the stands. Were any VU coaches there? I know some will focus on Jamaica being about sprints and that invariably these kids will gravitate towards southern schools and California (warmer climates), but couldn't VU use an outstanding 400 or 800 runner or hurdler? Didn't VU have a outstanding hurdler from Jamaica recently? Samantha Francis (jumper) is from Jamaica. Coach Williams is from Jamaica. Shouldn't VU be more active in Jamaica or in the Carribean in general? Have to believe there are some outstanding scholar-athletes in the area who want an outstanding education and are thinking past their next medal or trophy.

Yes, some of these kids are farily "old." Ever been to Penn Relays and check out these "kids"? The guys are grown men. But some will be 19, this year - essentially freshmen. So assess their times from that perspective. And some measure-up. For example, Chris-Ann Gordon (400/800) or Omar McLeod (hurdles). Be bold: Machel Cedeno (Trinidad), 400.

VU gets very little play from outstanding U.S. scholar athelets. Even Canada. Simply have to be more creative.

Note: (Dr.) Arthur Wint took gold in '48 (400) & '52 (4x400) and silver '48 & '52 (800). Arkansas has a miler - Campbell - from Jamaica. And didn't G'town have an 800 runner from Jamaica recently?

Note: I am talking 400/800 here. VU needs to focus more on this area.

Something to think about.

It seems that the sprinters from the NYC metro area go to South Carolina. Thus far, this year, they have signed Precius Holmes (CT) and Southerland's teammate, Deajah Stevens. In the past, though, Cardozo tracks stars have gone to schools that fit their specialties: Alex Panisse (800/mile) to Tennessee; Claudia Francis (400/800) to Oregon; Chamique Francis (200/400) to Texas; Lateisha Philson (hurdles) to Miami; Dalilah Muhamed (sprint, hurdles, jumps) to U So. Cal. So it would seem that Sabrina would be thinking G'town or VU. Right now, one might argue that G'town is stronger in the distances and XC; VU is stronger at middle distances.

Believe G'town has recruited better over the past couple of year and thus far, this year. VU can point to Piccirillo, Margey and Schappert. G'town can say Coogan, Nadel, Pierce, Paul and now Keenan & Kurgatt (2013). Suggests VU has a much greater need. Aside: think Brislin will surprise.

Okay, I am rooting for VU. Imagine the relays at Penn with her ... But based on past experience - VU tried for both Panisse and Claudia Francis - one has to hesitate. Has anyone from Cardozo ever come to VU?.
