Recruiting for 2013 - General

It's very difficult to judge the true ability of people without in depth knowledge of their training/form. One thing I noticed at the Penn Relays is how much better the Jamaican kids held form at the end of a quarter mile than the American kids. That's just good coaching.

With the weather and the change in starting time, I did
not go down to the State Championship.in Middletown.
Brislin ran a personal best 4:29+. A tenth grader from Garden
City Emma Gallagher ran about 2:08 in the 800.

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

There's a story (linked) in today's Times Ledger about Sabrina Southerland going to Georgetown. The article states that she chose Georgetown over Villanova pretty much solely due to family reasons: to be close to her aunt, who lives in DC.

http://usa.milesplit.com/articles/107594-new-balance-outdoor-nationals-entry-list-updated-6-12-101-complete

A few names on these Sat. start lists could be getting campus visits in about 8 weeks. NB is a good place to see a lot of people at once. Weight and physique mistakes I've seen some programs make (not VU) can be pretty bad but that's their choice (of 'ship).

^ Grad Southerland will be racing and may be tested by a few younger talents. Two from N.England I 'd have an interest in are Sr. Karina Shepard and Jr. Hannah Parker.

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

Monday morning was contact day, July 1 kicks things off. I'd probably start with a few regional calls:

Josette Norris - (Ten., NJ) #2 at NB mile 4:48
Kennedy Weisner - (St.Marys,Pa) 2:11, 4:52
Megan Wilson - (Md) 5'9 just gave up V'ball. Mom ran for Nova in 80's. 2:10.3
Erin Jaskot - (Tappen Zee,NY) 2:09.6
Regan Rome - (Dallas,Pa) CC standout has visited Dartmouth
Blake Dodge - (More.,NC) 2:08.84 at NB Nationals

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

You have to wonder about the pole vaulter Wasik's brother. National class in the decathlon.

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

Speaking of Regan Rome, in addition to Dartmouth visit, she has been offered by LSU -- confirmed to me by coach Dennis Shaver.

Speaking of coaches, Marcus usually returns to hometown for Cork City Sports track meet (last weekend) -- wonder if he went this year and if there's an off-the-radar recruiting target in Ireland.

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

Rumor (VU or FU) on Lets run of a possible transfer of Duck Chad Noelle (Binghamton, NY?). I'm sure Marcus called a few years ago but what the interest level is now IDK?

Transfer

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

I saw Chad as a sophomore in high school run about
a 4:20 mile in our invational. The next thing I know he
is training with a school in the next valley and running 4:12.
It is common up here in the hills that kids with great potential
train with coaches at other schools. He might have been lost in the shuffle
with the Ducks. I only live twenty miles from his high school. Hasn't he run
some really decent times at Oregon.

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

Went over to Let's Run to read about Chad Noelle. Once you cut through the sophomoric comments, you get the impression that Villanova and possibly Syracuse might be viable options.

O'Sullivan has a mixed record on transfers. Recently, he rejected Ciaran O'Lionaird (IRL) transfer from Michigan. But he tolerated the indecision by John Richardson (back-and-forth with Kentucky) and accepted the transfer of Cody Harper (NM) from Duke (I believe). Noelle would be an interesting addition to the VU squad - primarily though in XC.

Penn Relays is where VU men can show their mettle. They came up short by one leg in each of the three relays they entered. In DMR, they needed a real 400 man; in 4x800, they needed another really good 800 man or two (Fitzsimons runs 1:51, Loxum runs 1:46, lost by 3.2 secs); 4xmile they need another good miler (Tully was not ready for prime time. One could conceivably see Noelle taking Tully's place, but Lampron will be ready. Does VU gain anything with Noelle vs Lampron? Lampron will be a freshman; Noelle will be a junior. Will O'Sullivan red-shirt Malone? Should resources be saved for outstanding runners in 2014 class - e.g., Joe White (Depaul Catholic, NJ), Sean Kelly (Chaminade, NY), Matt Murray (NY), Joseph Logue (PA), Zyaire Clemes (NJ), Jamaad Muse (NJ)?

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Emma Biggs (Amherst, MA)

Seems as though Emma Biggs -- a 200 meter specialist from Amherst-Pelham Regional high school (MA) -- will run for Villanova starting this fall (see attached article):

EMMA BIGGS, Amherst
The senior was the PVIAC champion in
the 200m; ran anchor leg for championship 4x100m relay team; placed
third in both events at Western/Central Mass. championship; broke school
record from 1989 in 200m (25.82); ran at Nationals; will attend
Villanova University to run D-I track & field.
Her PRs are as follows:

55m: 7.75
100m: 13.13
200m: 25.82
300m: 43.16
LJ: 12' 3"

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Emma Biggs (Amherst, MA)

Might be more to Biggs than appears. Seems she played lacrosse and soccer. And may have run track for only one outdoor season and two indoor seasons.

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Emma Biggs (Amherst, MA)

Villanova needs to basically be crafty with sprinting recruits.

Some interesting results from Italy (Euro Jrs) including this 800 w's final. Iceland has its own version of Cain in Anita Hinriks (17) and a young girl from Ulster (A. Crossey) who had two pr's in her two races. Irish Jrs. just missed out on bronze medals in w800 m1500.

Check-out the women's 800 final.(Euro Junior). Several excellent runners who would look good at VU. Note at the end when Siofra kneels to congratulate Anita. It is as though they are old friends. Cool. Could that be a harbinger of a future together say at VU? Would have been nice, but Anita H has no plans for leaving Iceland until after the Olympics in 2016. VU should focus on C-Buttner, Crossey and Trost, but I do not believe VU has ever recruited in Germany. Would Gina & Marcus recruit two girls from Ireland in same year? And there are several other outstand females on the 2014 class - e.g., Elise Cranny (CO), Cain (?). Sort of explains the somewhat limited recruiting effort this year.

Note Ireland has another outstanding female after Crossey and C-Buttner - Alanna Lally (55.2, 2:10.8)..

Crossey has made tremendous progress in past year.

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

Chad Noelle transferred to Oklahoma St. Wonder if VU was ever in the discussion? Or did Marcus simply say no?

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

sebastianic,

There has been nothing in the papers about Chad's tranfer
although the thread on Let's Run has some differing views
on his move. Wouldn't you think that VU Athletcs would, by now,
hav our roster and schedule up?

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

Many years they don't have a roster up until the xc season is well underway. I think last year it was up early, so who knows when they get around to it.

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

Remember the name Dylan Thomasen of Unadilla
Valley, N.Y. Going into the USATF 1500 at Greenboro his
Fastest time was 4: 15. He qualfied for the finals with a time
of 4:13+. In the finals he finished third with a time of 4:05.55
And he is only entering his junior year.

He lives in the next valley over from where I live. It is a merged
school district, and it is still small. At one time these two tiny
schools sent kids to our school because we were the only school
in the area to offer AP courses.

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

There's been some late summer turnover on the UConn roster [so said Lets Run] with some top talent getting releases. Of particular interest would be So. -- Winnipeg native --Julia Zrinyi (just turned 19) who was a fr. NCAA qual with 2:04 / 4:16.5 speed who's won two cnj 800 titles.

She could be headed to ISU with the former UConn coach but there could be issues with that who knows?
UConn could stop these kids from competing in '13(CC)/'14 or allow them immediate elig: it's up to the ex-BE school

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

Another of their runners just got an unconditional release and is probably going to ISU.

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

Seb Coe: Villanova was in discussion with Chad Noelle, but there were "some issues" that queered things. Not sure what they were, but there were some rumors afloat that Noelle was asked to leave Oregon. I have no way of knowing if that is true, but -- if so -- there may be some baggage. Moreover, the original theory (that he was homesick out in Oregon) seems to be bunk, inasmuch as he transferred to Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Re: Recruiting for 2013 - Southerland

Speaking of UCONN, and SIAP, but it seems pretty clear that Villanova's Faith Dismuke has transferred to Connecticut. Lots of Twitter and Instagram chatter from Dismuke herself -- including her wearing a UCONN shirt (see link). New coaching staff there and lots of roster changes. Not sure why Dismuke would transfer -- any theories?

Am hearing that Regan Rome is a strong GTown lean. Nova not in play.

Looks like 200/400-meter man Sean Fitzgerald (LaSalle Institute, Troy, NY) will be trying to walk on for Villanova this year. Here are his PRs. Looks like 200 meters is his best shot. His MileSplit page is linked.

I like it. Marcus tries. Remember he has limited resources and there is some very nice talent (see 2014 recruiting thread) coming out in 2014 that is in VU's traditional recruiting territories Reminds of an earlier recruit (walk on) from several years ago, Jonathan Hayes (NH), who came in with similar stats, but I don't believe ever ran. Fitzgerald has nice size - 5'11", 145 lbs - and may be late bloomer. Always think of Mike Kerrigan. Probably greatest return on an "investment" Marcus ever made.

It appears that Julia Zrinyi is heading to Oregon. The rich get richer. Oregon is getting to be a second home for Canadians.

Was VU ever in the hunt? Did Marcus and Gina simply say "No"? And if so, what were their reasons? Grades? Available talent in 2014 class? There are several already running better times than Zrinyi. Does Gina believe they have realistic shots at this talent coming out in 2014?

Different set of questions: Does the acquisition of Zrinyi make Oregon favorites in any of the three (DMR, 4x1500, 4x800) relays at Penn in 2014?

On the bright side, this makes it easier for Villanova girls to qualify for the national meet in the east regional.

TFE,

We know that many of those recruits are academic
grants-in- aid. If they compete for Stanford aren't they counted
against their NCAA scholarship limit?

Creative accounting that Villanova has neither the resources nor the financial aid money to do.

In searching for the Big 5 Invitational results, last night, I wound up on the Penn site. They had 38 (20 women, 18 men) in their frosh class. That is an entire team. More and more, VU appears to be "the little engine that could"...

Side note: There was a Canadian runner, Alex Freemantle (800 / 1600) with nice times as a junior - so-so as a senior. Same school as Sheila Reid - Sacred Heart (York, Ontario). Puzzled why VU did not pursue him. Guess VU could not "afford" him. Kid is going to Columbia with a financial aid package (that is the Ivy way). Another Canadian kid, with similar times and a year older - Scott Buttinger - is going to Stanford.

Just an interesting aside about shadow banking in college recruiting. So we should really appreciate what Marcus and Gina are accomplishing vis-a-vie their competition - all of those state schools and the well-endowed Ivies & Stanford ...

SebCoe -- I though the same thing about Alex Freemantle. I asked someone very close to the situation 6 months ago about him & Villanova. I was told that Villanova is not recruiting Freemantle. Not a sniff.

Folks, I apparently commented too soon. Just saw the 2014 indoor roster. VU has 28 incoming freshmen (14 men, 14 women). that does not include Mike Palmisano (Grad) or possibly Sean Fitzgerald (mentioned above). So maybe the "little engine that can" is in the ball game to some extent.

Whatever happened with Sean Fitzgerald? I envisioned him as a potential 800 man. Like the idea of giving "walk-ons" a chance. A low risk investment. He is not on the roster.
