Al Morganti on WIP this morning

I tuned in today in the car in the middle of a Temple lovefest, as they were discussing how Rhea Hughes, Mark Farsetta, Rob Charry (all of whom were on the show) all went to Temple and they named others. They also talked about Temple playing Penn State and Notre Dame this year and what a good coach Ruhle (sp?) is. Morganti (who did not go there) said he was always told if you wanted to be good in communications then go to temple and if you wanted to be good in business, go to Villanova. Of course, Charry comes up with the tired refrain that Villanova isn't even in the city, and said "what have they ever won" (although I could tell he said it tongue in cheek.). Morganti said, they've won a lot out there. Then he said he thought Andy Talley was the best football coach in the area and that included Chip Kelly. He praised all the success that Andy has had there. There wasn't much of a response. Nice to hear Morganti say that, though.

Team Final (Peach Jam)

I watched bits and pieces of their first game in the afternoon, as they lost to Team Takeover by 20 plus. It seemed like they really struggled to get much of anything together. Tonny Carr is hurt, so without him they struggled.

Stevens and Walker where the top to scorers for Team Final in the first game. Stevens went 5-12, mostly inside. Walker was 4-10 from the feild, including two threes. The game was in no doubt, in my opinion.

Painter was 4-5 from the feild, but only had two rebounds. Being six foot Tenn and having two rebounds is a little concerning.

Next game is at 7:30 against Wings Elite.

OT: Sixers Draft

I think this needs its own thread. I really don't care that much about the NBA, but have followed the Sixers from a distance. Hinkie has looked like a shrewd gambler despite the lingering Ebiid injury...until last night. Okafor pick makes sense. The rest...not so much. Why not trade a couple later second round picks...or even three second round picks to move up in the round? Why draft four more big men? I think he traded one of them, but he didn't draft a single guard. Does he still have a plan or is he just throwing darts at a board?

Part Five - Looking Ahead...2015-2016 Season

We all know that Jay likes to keep his scholarship level at 10. In the past four years that has been - 10 - 11 - 10 -10. Next year Jay will have 11 (ten eligible and one must sit out). We will have 2 Seniors (Arcidiacono & Ochefu), 3 Juniors (Hart, Jenkins & Reynolds) 1 Sophomore (Booth), 4 Freshmen (Brunson, DiVincenzo, Delaney and a redshirt frosh in Bridges) and Eric Paschall to sit out as a transfer with 3 years of eligibility left.
In the past four years Jay's rotation has been - 10 - 9 - 9 - 8. But recruits want to play and not sit. Jay has four new freshmen that he has to work into the rotation. Will they all accept their roles as in the past two years? If no one transfers at the end of the year then we'll know the answer.
Josh Hart has created a new role for Jay and his rotation. We have a 6th man who certainly could be a starter who brings high energy and ends up with starter minutes. His role has been critical to the success of the team these past two seasons. Who will Josh hand the baton to?
Let's look at the starters and rotation and minutes for the team next year. Of course, all this could change after their European trip next month and preseason workouts in September - October.
5 - Ochefu - 28mpg (17.5 - 21.7 - 24) Has had some stamina issues to improve on this year.
4 - jenkins - 20mpg (11.7 - 18.6) Definitely has had stamina issues to correct. Will also play some 3 & 5.
3 - Hart - 28mpg (21.4 - 25.5) Will also play some 4 & 2.
2- Arcidiacono - 28mpg (34 - 31.1 - 30.4) Will also play some 1.
1- Booth - 23mpg (14.5) - Will also play the 2. Experience and best shooter on the team gets him to start.
6th Man - Brunson - 28mpg -Will play the 1 & 2. This is the high energy guy. It should also keep him here for 2 years. Best situation for team chemistry. However, this could change over the next 2 months.
7th - Bridges - 11mpg at the 3. Being in the top 7 gets him into every game. Perimeter player behind the arc. A shooter not a slasher to the cup. Had troubles with his handle in traffic. Did he improve it? Never liked contact either - has that changed? Went from 190 to 208 in one year - that's 18 lbs of muscle!! Has to learn his role on the team - it will take some time.
8th - Reynolds - 11mpg (3.1 - 5.4) at the 5. Someone besides Jenkins will have to spell Ochefu. Athletic and knows Jay's system after 2 years. Not skilled enough to play the 4 unless he's really improved.
9th - DiVincenzo - 11mpg at the 2 & 3. Very high ceiling with his athleticism but must learn the system.
10th - Delaney - 10mpg at the 4 & 5. Wish he would redshirt as he's the youngest freshman and is he all healed from last year? Has inside and outside skills but may struggle with the speed of the game. Can shoot it but needs time and distance. Reynolds has the advantage of being more athletic and knows our system. However, there is no one on the team as fundamentally sound as Delany. Even as a freshman he has a PhD in hoopology - a Dr. of basketball!!
11th - Henry Lowe - 1mpg (0.7 - 1.4 - 2.1) at the 1
12th - Pat Farrell - 1mpg (1.3 - 1.5 - 1.8) at the 3.

Our 9th & 10th men may get a DNP in 6 games. Two out-of-conference games against Top 10 teams (Oklahoma and Virginia) should be very telling on Jay's rotation. Looks like a 14-4 Big East record (X,Butler, Marquette, Georgetown and either Providence or Creighton) will be tough "gets" on the road. Our success in the Big East Tournament should determine our seed in the NCAA Tournament. Probably a 2 or 3. Hopefully, this is an Elite Eight team this year. Should we make it to the Final Four then worry about Hart and Brunson leaving with Arch (Professional ball in Italy) and Ochefu (hopefully a 1st round pick in the NBA).
Beefer, what sayeth you?

A couple of thoughts in mid-July

1) I am really looking forward to hearing/watching some games in the Peach Jam this weekend. I am intrigued to see what Dylan Painter shows. I believe I am on record to passing on him, but it could be intriguing to see what he does, especially since he is six foot ten.

2) The more I think about it, I believe Quade Green and Lonnie Walker can play with each other. Both have very good ball skills and are good shooters, in the case of Quade he is an elite shooter. While Quade may be on the smaller side, Lonnie is bigger and can make up the difference. For Quade I see a little Scottie Reynolds in him, he just knows how to score and shoot. I think these two would make for a lethal backcourt. The way Qaude can shoot makes him coveted and a special player.

3) Watching Jalen Brunson play last week was a treat. We got not a good one, but a special one. A true PG, not only gets everyone involved, but makes everyone better. He has a ticker in his head in when and where to get someone the ball. For example, Giles didn't get the ball for three straight possessions in a game last week. Jalen slowed the ball down and made sure Giles got a touch. Most PG's at his stage don't realise that when a player needs a touch, in that case most of his teamates would chuck up a shot. A very good stutter move and finishes. I envision a lot of three guard lineups next year.

4) Simply, I see Arch playing more off ball than we have seen in previous years, which I am good with. We have two finishers, Arch and Jalen.

5) I think Mikal Bridges will provide us a punch off the bench this year. He is a wildcard for us. He has way too many skills and too much versatility to not be on the court for an extended amount of time. He gives Jay a ton of options and he can shoot the ball. Iike his game, I think he is being slept on.

6) I would like to see Arch, Booth, Jalen, Hart, and Ochefu lineup to start the year. I think that is our best lineup with Bridges, Jenkins, Reynolds, and DD coming off the pine.

Lamar Stevens, Lonnie Walker, Painter (7/10)

Team Final up at the Half 41-34 on Team CP3. Stevens has 10&6 at the Half and out playing top five player Harry Giles, who played with Jalen last week. A couple of nice drives, dunks, and a jump shot. He finished the Half with an and1.

Lonnie Walker started the Half out nicely with a three and a baseline step back from mid-range. But he has been quite as of late, lots of open shots out there, so he could have a big second half.

Painter hasn't really show much, had a nice little hook shot, but missed that and a dunk. Simply, he hasn't done much!!

OT: Fox TV rating for women's World Cup final

Over 25 million tuned in. It beat the World Series and NBA Finals. Most watched soccer game in the history of this country by far.

I don't think it has any direct impact on Big East hoops viewership at all, but hopefully it somewhat helped the credibility of Fox Sports and Fox Sports 1 beyond Sunday NFL.

Rob Stone was the face of women's World Cup programming too, and he is also the face of Big East hoops on the network.

OT: Pissing The Bed Drunk

Nothing I am proud of, but in my college years, 20s, this was something I did from time to time, thankfully haven't done it in a few years and I believe it is more of a mental thing than a physical thing, it is also a drinking way too F'ing much thing. I had a buddy in college who would call it being "in season," because he wouldn't do it for months, than he would do it 3 weekends in a row, and then he wouldn't do it for another 3 months, then he would do it 2 nights in a row, and so on. So when he was doing it he called it being "in season."

Anyway, my cousin is in college and he started doing it and asked if I knew of anyway to stop. I kind of just outgrew it, again, I think it is a mental thing and I think subconsciously I was just like you are too old for this sh*t and stopped, but I know other people have ordered desmopressin offline, started setting alarms for themselves, etc. Believe it or not, it seems like this is a more common problem than people want to admit so I have heard of all different ways.

Hearing some of the stories on here I thought this wouldn't be a bad group to reach out to, if anybody has any advice let me know. Grazie.

mea culpa

i thought sam hinkie knew basketball as well or even better than me. i was wrong.

embiid clearly had greater upside than anyone drafted after him, and a framework of athletic/basketball ability to fit in any situation if in good health. neither of these things are true of okafor. even if embiid's foot physically falls off, noel was a better nba player by march than okafor will ever be. nitwits like ashtray-face feinstein and kornheiser who think okafor is better than embiid or noel were never once independently struck by the thought that towns was a better prospect in december or even february; they got in line when the critical mass of consensus shifted. if the cavaliers had noel they may have won the title; if they had okafor he'd have been sitting between marion and haywood.

okafor has huge hands and shot 51% from the line. did shaq ever develop a jumper? shaq couldn't defend ballscreens either. however at 19 shaq played two feet above the rim, not under it like okafor.

jay bilas in a rare moment of accuracy described towns as a "perfect prospect", a rim protector capable of playing positionless basketball. okafor is the opposite of that. doesn't rebound at a high level, or project to block shots at all. he doesn't move his feet or change ends very well at all. he didn't even score that well in the post against opponents with nba size. he's obsolete, redundant and overrated even in his areas of strength.

he wasn't one of the five best players in this draft. nobody who saw each player in high school thought russell was better than mudiay, a true point guard in the old school sense with the new school body and athleticism of an outside receiver in the nfl. porzingis wasn't playing in some y league in riga, he was in the spanish league, scoring 12 & 5 on 54% shooting in 22 minutes a game. he blocks shots, has already expanded his faceup game beyond being a standstill 3 point shooter, and jumps over the backboard. winslow defends, beats his man off the dribble, and thrives in the open floor.

complete unmitigated disaster.
