Phillies 2016 Season

Great offense the last 2 days, boys. 1 run in 18 innings vs the worst team in baseball.

The unbelievable lack of offense is catching up to them. You can't keep scoring 2 runs a game and win. The pitching has been very good as well as the bullpen.

The organization has to stay the course and I get that but what would their record be with a legit offensive first baseman and corner outfielders.

No. My issues with you at times haven't been about Howard. I mostly agree with you over last 3 seasons. The problem was that contract wasn't getting moved and they were never going to cut their loses when still owing him 75 million. That just wasn't happening, so to me it was pointless to me to bash him day in and day out.

The other part of it was that he didn't suck for his entire career. He had great years and was very instrumental in arguably the franchise's greatest era. I understand decline comes and eventually players aren't good anymore, but if they were once really good, then I appreciate that and choose not to rip them. That's just me.

I didn't disagree with you for criticizing his performance, tho. The numbers were there for everyone to see.

This. Never understood people killing the guy. If you don't like what's going on talk to Boston's first base coach or Middleton.

Joseph will start tomorrow, will hit in Detroit as the DH, and coming out of that he'll be the starter. We will be at 80% in no time

This must be at the behest of management. Mackanin doesn't seem like he's the kind of guy who plays guys for their decade old MVP awards.
One of the reasons the previous manager quit. You cant win when your cleanup hitter is batting sub .200.

The true test will come after the DH series with DET. They have 5 of 6 RHP vs CHIC/WAS after that.

Mackanin benches Herrera for not running out a comebacker to the pitcher - I get what he was doing there but I think it was unnecessary. The only reason it looked bad was because the pitcher sort of lollygagged the throw to make it look close. Hopefully it never comes up again, Herrera has been fantastic this season and needs to be in the lineup everyday. Joseph with another strong game both at the plate and in the field - Howard needs to be benched.

You can attest to my balls, too.

Criticisms of Howard over the past few seasons have been warranted and I don't have a problem with that part of it.
What do you have a problem with, if I was a Phillies fan, I would have wanted him cut or traded and eat 80% of his contract before last year. There, I gave a solid answer.

Jog out an obvious out? BENCHED.
Hit .160 and lead the league in errors at your position? MIDDLE OF THE LINEUP FOR 5 YEARS.

Herrera has been tremendous the whole year. That's a horrid benching. Mackanin's first hiccup this year. Terrible.

I didn't have a problem with the benching, but I think Herrera did it out of frustration. Also, it's not the first time he shut it down. He's 24 and healthy, so there is no reason not to run. If you're 20 feet from the base and you can see an accurate throw from 2B on line, then that's one thing.

I think Mackanin made his point----IMO he could also have justifiably benched him for tonights game but he showed some restraint and decided not to do it. Remember that this is not Herrera's first offense in this regard-----it also happened last year. Bottom line is that I doubt that we'll be seeing that sort of lame effort again any time soon out of OH------because he now knows and understands that if it happens again he'll likely not only be pulled from the game but will also probably be on the bench for the next game or two, at the very least!! The TEAM is always more important than any individual player or any individual game, and that goes for any team sport----so I think the manager did the appropriate thing in this case. In fact I think Pete has been pulling pretty much all the right strings all season long for this team, so I think he deserves a lot of the credit for the Phils surprising performance so far this year.
And with that said, there's no question in my mind that Pete is also a "major" upgrade from what turned out to be an "overmatched" and "overwhelmed" Ryne Sandberg!!

I think Mackanins biggest plus is that he is fluent in Spanish from all those years in the Venezualan summer league. He can communicate with all the Latin-American players without an interpreter and has a good understanding of their culture as well. With a team that has a majority of those players that his a huge plus.

I'm a big fan of PM so far.
I won't make a bad joke about how Brett Brown will be able to speak Australian to Simmons.

Where would the Phillies be without Herrera this season? He no doubt has to make the All Star team, probably the Phils only rep unless Gomez gets selected, maybe Velasquez or Nola?

joseph hit well vs. the rh's this series, i think he's the starter moving forward. lefty on the mound on friday in chicago, after that he'll be at the 80% mark i bet.

How is the savior Franco doing? Was on pace during spring training to win the triple crown. Are they just not pitching to him?

Dumb. Boring. Trolling post from someone with nothing better to do. The short of it -- Yawn!

Franco is slowly starting to swing a better bat. He has been opening up a lot with his front side and not getting in good swings. I had him pegged for 30 HR this year, still can get there but 22-25 looks more realistic.

Thank you for a real response.

Joseph starting vs LHP. That's 5 of 10 in non-DH games (50%). One start vs RHP. Overall, 8 of 13 (61.5%).

We've seen enough of Adam Morgan. Time to put this horse down. He can only get out the Braves. He stinks. There's a handful of guys in the minors who are better options.
