Director of OPM

Was reading up on the OPM Director who presided over the Chinese carting off the personnel files of the whole federal government, including that of our entire intelligence and counterintelligence work forces.

Was absolutely stunned and amazed to find that Obama appointed a Democrat Party flunkie, who not only knows jack squat about IT security, she knows jack squat about personnel management as well.

However, she is the first ever Latina Director and is "committed to building an innovative and inclusive workforce that reflects the diversity of America", which is the important thing. Her bio also states she is a "champion of Federal employees", which I'm sure will be comforting to them as they begin receiving recruitment/blackmail phone calls and emails from Chinese intelligence.

The other guy who really separated himself from the rest of the pack was 6'8 Omari Spellman from Granby (MacDuffie School) MA and he simply picked up where he left off a week ago at the NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp with his ability to run the court, deceptive mobility around the basket, and knack for being able to finish just about anything he gets his hands on when he is in a position score from mid-range and in. He also stepped out and showed that he has nice range on his jump shot, garnered more than his share of rebounds, and made a strong case for a top five national ranking in the Class of 2016. However, as fate would have it, Spellman is another guy who will be ineligible to play in the McDonald's All-American Game due to the fact that he will be a 5th Year Player next season. On the other hand, Spellman, who finished ranked #3 overall just a week-and-a-half ago at the NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp, appears to be well on his way toward being one of the leading candidates for Top Player-of-the-Summer honors, especially if he turns in another strong performance at the NIKE EYBL Finals at the Peach Jam. He also is a tough match-up with his size and bulk around the basket and, as a result, should be exactly what the doctor ordered for Villanova head coach Jay Wright when he enrolls into school a year from now.

Next year thoughts and Key guy...

When I think about our team next year, I see a Top 10 team - a 3 seed - a very good team but one where a few things need to happen.

A. First we need to stay healthy. We are relatively thin on quality players at the Top 10 national level. We really have 6 that have proven it. 7 is up in the air. 8 is possible, but a stretch. 9 and 10 are stretches...

B. Our team last year was very strong because not only did we have an experienced and strong starting five - we also brought three potential killers off the bench in Hart, Jenkins and Booth. In most games, it was contributions from one of those three that really created separation from our opponent.

C. Our starting five profiles to be as strong as last year. Arch, Booth/Brunson, Hart, Jenkins, Ochefu should be as good or better than last year's five assuming natural improvements in their game.

D. The challenge is - and why I project us as a 3 seed rather than a 1 seed - is whether Brunson/Booth, Bridges and Donte can match or even be comparable to Hart, Jenkins, Booth. Booth and Hart were almost flawless off the bench last year. That's a lot to ask from Jalen and Donte. Bridges vs. Jenkins should be close.

E. Which brings us to my "key guy" for the season - Mikal Bridges. Our three guards will split 80 minutes - between Arch/Phil and Jalen. Mikal will be asked to play about 25 minutes a game rotating with Josh and Kris at the 3/4. Daniel is ticketed for 30 a night and the other 10 will be a crap shoot between Darryl, Tim and one of the 3/4's. Mikal is critical, because he's the 7th man, a guy asked to play 25 minutes a game and a guy who's key input will not be his shooting as expected, but his rebounding. His rebounding will be key to this season and I think he will be a very active, bouncy contributor off the glass - and we need him to be. I think his ability to battle true 4's on the glass will be critical. The Davis Center knows that...

F. Next year will be similar as we will have a dynamite 6 with Jalen, Phil, Josh, Eric, Kris and Omari. 7-9 will again be the question.

Keys to next two seasons - and both could be VERY special - is staying healthy and the contribution of the 7th and 8th men.

Seinfeld Dated a 17 Year Old?

I was 5 when these events began (1993) so I don't remember any of this - but it all seems pretty insane to me. The most well known actor on television was dating a 17 (soon to be 18) year old and people were generally sympathetic? You guys remember any of this?

Really was a different era. Biggest surprise for me: Conan O'Brien had a late night show in 1995. Man I was not as conscious as I thought.

Power Six Conferences?

Saw this on Wikipedia, I know, I know, anybody can edit Wikipedia, but trust me, you put bad information in there and they change it real quick. Anyway, I have always heard it as the Power Five AND The Big East, this is the first time I am seeing it referred to as the Power Six for basketball. Don't get me wrong, I'll take it, but am I the only one who was unaware of this?

Our newcomers....an outsider's view

A coaching friend of mine visited Nova a few weeks ago and watched a workout. He had a lot of very positive things to say abot our newcomers(Bridges included) Brunson obviously wasn't there.

1st player he mentioned was Bridges. REALLY likes him. He mentioned his all around game and skill set. Thinks he is going to be a really good player for us.

Paschall...good but needs to get in shape and lose some lbs(or was he talking about me???)

Delaney....probably one of the few positives I have heard about Delaney. It was also music to my ears in how he described him. Said he is big and strong and tough. He battles and competes. He said he wasn't sure how much he would help this year but thinks he will be a factor for us down the line. To me, he described an A10 or Miami(Oh) type starting big that I always wish we could have on our team. Let's hope he is dead on

Donte D...extremely athletic guard that can play.

We were talking about Jenkins, and I mentioned that he could play some 5 this year. This coach said he didn't think so because he thinks Reynolds will be a part of the rotation. He doesn't think he will provide much offense but he can really rebound and block shots.

This guy is not the type to inflate players(if anything he goes the other way)so it was really good and exciting to hear these comments about the guys we don't know so much about yet.

Hey All

It's been a little bit since I have posted on here with Nova basketball related opinions, I needed some time to step back and focus on other things. However, I have been following the news and wanted to share some thoughts/opinions with you all!

1) Congratulations to Hilliard on getting drafted, what an accomplishment. It is always good to see someone who worked hard get what they deserved. Congratulations DH, hopefully Detroit will lead to a long NBA stay. Just goes to show us and every recruit that Nova develops their players for the long term.

2) Spellman, by the reports I am getting excited to see this guy play. He has such a diverse skill set, inside and out. I love his body and motor. I think he will only get better in time, especially in the strength and conditioning. He is going to be a match up nightmare for years to come in he Big East. He gives Jay a ton of options as well and could possibly diversify the offense in years to come. With Spellman being able to shoot, it creates lanes for Brunson to operate and make plays for himself and other. Those two together will be scary. Spellman, in my opinion, will takes leaps in his game once his body improves.

3) Jalen Brunson, I watched a few of his games that were linked here. I liked what I saw even more, a very impressive player. He looked a lot more quicker than previous times I had watched him. He has a tricky handle, very quick hands. I love the way he plays, gets after it. He will impact this team and program from day 1, very clear to see. A far better passer than originally thought. If you really take a step back and look, he is playing with a bunch of good players, potential draft picks, and one and done players, and he is getting his while getting everyone involved. For a player who has yet to play a college game to understand that is just impressive.

Recruiting thoughts:
1) Lonnie Walker, I really like his game. He has a lot of what I look for in a player that Nova is recruiting. Good basketball body, athletic, and has very good basketball skills that are obvious. I would take him if he wanted in right away, I just feel like he fits with what Jay is trying to do. The one thing I want to see him improve is his motor, but Jay can get that out of him. One thing that I question is his ranking, now I don't put too much stock into rankings, but he is more of a top 50 player, not top 20. I think that ranking is a little too high. He struggled against some teams this year that top 20 players would never dream about struggling against. All in all, I would still take him. Lonnie running the wings on a break would be a sight to see. I love that we are in great shape with him. An observation I have with Lonnie is that as he develops his off the dribble game, he will not have a problem going left or right and pulling up. He has an explosive first step into his shot.

2) Quade Green, I have always liked his game. A superior shooter, yes superior. Overall, he has a great feel for the game. I always enjoy watching him play. He truly has a killer instinct to his game. The one weakness he has is his height and lack of bounce. Does he have enough bounce to his game to play at a high level? Like Syracuse? Only time will tell. Is it possible Quade and Lonnie could play together? I believe they tried once and it did not work. He is really having an impressive summer and I think he is the best player in Philly next year, right with either Carr or Stevens. I would be good with having him at Nova as well. I do think he could run a team as the PG, but that off guard better have good size with him.

3) Dylan Painter, simply, I think I would pass on him. With Spellman in fold I would rather find a face up four who can hang inside and who has versatility to his game than Painter. However, the big question for me is how he develops through the Summer and even Spring. I think Beefer mentioned he should wait till the Spring to sign and I agree. I am not high on Painter as some are. I want the right guy with Spellman, not someone who may or may not fit.

4) Bamba, In my opinion, he is the best prospect to come out of Philly in a long time. I was impressed with what I saw from him in the Winter. He reminds me of Nerlens Noel, with more of a sophisticated game at this time. For a six foot eleven kid to handle and shoot the ball the way he does is elite. The skill set he provides is out of this world. I read that some guru was ranking him the 2-3 best prospect in PA? That is crazy, asinine, and insane. Bamba is a top ten player in his class and the best prospect in PA, hands down, no doubt in my mind. We have an uphill battle for Bamba and I think he ends up elsewhere, but it will be interesting to see how his recruitment plays out.

All in all, Jay has us in great shape this year and for years to come. I know I am going to enjoy the continued success we are having. Jay and staff get after it this time of year and they will continue to put themselves in a position to continue landing these big time players.

Have at it.
