Today always gets me thinking about America's Greatest Generation. Villanova has her share of these great people.
Michael Martin (Nick) Basca is one. Nick was born to immigrant parents (Austria for dad, Austria-Hungry for mom) Dad worked in a steel mill in Phoenixville. Nick was a great athlete at Sacred Heart grade school and Phoenixville High. Spent a year at Pennington Prep before starting his college career at Villanova in 1938. Was a triple threat football player while playing for famous VU coach Clipper Smith and also playing some hoops and baseball. Made All State and All East in football. Graduated in 1941 with a BS in Education. Played for Boston All Stars in their game vs Chicago Bears and College All Stars vs NYG.
The NYG, Chicago Cardinals, Pittsburg Steelers, Green Bay Packers, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns, Philly Eagles all contacted Nick. Went with Philly. His last pro game was Dec 7,1941 at Washington. Enlisted Dec 10, 1941. Sent to England with Patton's 5th Army. This group was the big fake army. Germans expect Patton to led the invasion. Allies used Patton to fool them. His troops went into France on June 17th. Nick a tank commander was killed near Nancy, France on November 11, 1944 when his tank was hit by a German 88 mm round. Buried in the American Catholic Military Cemetery in Limey, France. He was returned to Phoenixville in 1949. He had two brothers serve, one of whom received three Purple Hearts.

In the past we had a couple of Basketball teams that were dubbed the Cardiac Cats by the local press. This years football team is doing a pretty good imitation with their come from behind and last minute wins. Today our O line was tremendous in that last, clock eating, drive. 80 plus yards, 16 plays all on the ground, for the winning TD. They owned the line of scrimmage. One for the memory books. The D line, Paris, Williams, Kpassagnon, and their backups were also very good. Kept Liberty's running back under control. Gutty win, against a very good team that looked ready to take home a win. Cats rose to the occasion once again. No quit in this special group, keep it going fellas!!!!

Villanova .Com, the official VU media outlet has Cats playing at 1PM next Saturday.

INCREDIBLE schedule. Johns Hopkins, Penn State and Maryland all at Villanova.

Jersey guys John Robertson and Kevin Monangai followed the Boss's direction, paraphrase the song Cats like us, baby we were Born to Run. Last minute JR TD capped off a 78 yard all run drive. Winning TD with 1:12 miuntes left. Both stars ran for over 100 and SAustin Medley also ran for TD. To long passes to Kevin Guylas were essential to the win. Bad weather watered down both teams causing TO and drops. This is getting to be fun. Take out the Texans next week.

The athletic future for northeast private schools is the beautiful game of futbol. Time for Villanova to make its move.

Will there be any special or restricted parking on Sat......since I don't have reserved parking, usually park on Lancaster across from the Field House. I assume there will be a fee for parking, right? And assume you will be able to stay there for the football game......anything else we need to know?

A great second half wins. Trailing 21 - 10 the Flames came back to win 26 - 21. 4:30 next Saturday in our house.

I'd love to go, but can't. I'd be so disappointed to miss it. VU should copy Delaware's web-tv set-up. It would allow other's to see not only football, but a wide variety of men's & women's programs (basketball, soccer, LX, etc. I'm still bedazzled at the excellence of UD's web-tv ...

One of 3 invitees. Vad Lee of JMU finished 4th. The Eastern Washington QB, a redshirt Jr. is favored with Robby and Idaho State's QB competing for runner-up honors. Unlike some, I thought Robby's season was very good but not spectacular after he broke his left hand in the opener at Syracuse. As Robby himself said, he couldn't use his left hand to fend off tacklers until the cast came off late in the season. So what could have been 100 yard rushing performances were reduced to 60-80 yard games. And then there was the 10-9 stinker at Richmond. I like Robby's chances in 2015, and, provided we find a go-to reveiver to replace Poppy (Gulyas?), a kicker, and Lucas fully recovers, I like VU's chances of reaching the Finals in 2015. This year I will be happy with an Elite 8 or Final 4 finish. But focusing on the matter at hand, I think Cats caught a break with Liberty, a grinding offense as opposed to JMU's go-go style of play. Our DBs had best be on their A game. A timely interception or 3 would go a long way toward neutralizing what I assume will be Liberty's gaudy passing yardage total. And we should plan on matching their FG's with our TDs. Its dangerous to go into the playoffs without a kicker, but here we are.

The late Gene Bartow's athletic program has finally run out of gas. The Blazers, darlings of ESPN's infant years and onetime marquee program of the late lamented Sun Belt Conference will join the ranks of defunct sports programs. The Sun Belt was the first Conference to succomb to relegation through realignment. It wasn't to be the last.
