Intro Letter - NovaIllustrated

My name is Mike Craven and welcome to NovaIllustrated. The next few months hold exciting changes and my hope is to keep everyone here along for the ride while adding new faces to the community as our coverage of basketball, recruiting and even some football gets rolling. There will undoubtedly be some road blocks and growing pains. I’m ready for the challenges surely coming and my only goal is and will always be to provide coverage worthy of your subscription.

I want this site to be a lot of things, many of which it already is thanks to a great job by the previous staff. We hope to live up to those standards while making it our own. I want the site to be informative. I want the site to encourage discussion. I want us to engage in honest and respectable debate. I want us to be the water cooler of Villanova sports. I want us to write solid pieces.

None of this will happen overnight. I need to put together a staff and formulate a true game plan to take the site to a new level. A lot of that is on me, but some of it is on the subscribers. I’m not going to walk in here with a lot of ego. This is your site, not mine. I believe the consumers should dictate the news, so tell me what you like and don’t like in a website like this. Give me suggestions. Do you want more stories on prospects? More previews for the upcoming basketball season? More football?

I graduated from college in 2007 and was hired as a small-town sports editor in a town outside of Austin, Texas soon after. In 2012, I joined Rivals to work for Orangebloods.com and to start BirdsUp.com, which covers UTSA athletics. On top of this gig, I’m still the publisher of BirdsUp.com, and I’m the senior writer at TexasFootball.com. My background is mostly in football, but I did cover the Spurs for a season for SBNation.

It’s uncomfortable for me to write about myself because it shouldn’t be the focal point. The content is of importance and I’m open to ideas on how to move this site forward. I pride myself on being reachable, so never hesitate to get at me on Twitter @CravenMike or in email at NovaIllustrated@gmail.com.

Shave Clubs

I hate to add another category of summer threads to go along with the plasma and cheesesteak ones, but has anyone tried one of the shave clubs? Harry's or Dollar Shave Club? Any other?

Serious question. Wondering if they are scams or have any redeeming qualities.

OT: Providence College

I just returned from a one-day pre-orientation session yesterday at PC. My two oldest kids will be seniors at Villanova in the fall but my youngest chose PC, so I went 2 for 3.

Anyway, I meant to post this earlier because this was my third trip to PC (not counting a very boozy/foggy road trip there in 1989 with EddieMac33 and others) and I have to say I am very impressed. We talk about the NBE and the level of commitment of the institutions to first class basketball, I think PC is there. My comment is that when seeing their basketball practice facility, I was really impressed and thought maybe I was mistaken in remembering the timeline of their new practice facility, because their facilities now are terrific. I wondered if I had it wrong and that it had already been constructed?? Turns out I was not mistaken. Their already great looking facilities are going to be even better to the tune of another $37 million. Very impressive. Combined with their business school that is under construction, hockey arena, and more and I am very excited for both my daughter and what I think will be a top-flight BE basketball school for years to come.

I do not know where Seton Hall, St John's and DePaul are going, but put PC down as a fully committed member of the NBE. Maybe this is old news for some of you but I was very glad to see this.

Cameras

I've been taking a lot more pictures now that I have a baby boi. Mostly iPhone stuff, which really looks terrible when you blow it up (even with the new iPhone, just not happy with the picture quality). I have the original Sony DSC RX100, which takes what I consider really gr8 photos. But, it doesn't have WiFi/NFC so it's kind of a pain in the ass to wait until I get home, toss the memory card in the computer, download everything, re-upload it to Google photos, and then send them to people. So, I'm in the market for a new camera.

It looks like I can go whole-hog and get a DSLR, but those seem to be too much of a pain in the rear to carry around (esp with all your lenses and stuff) and most people who have these are real, actual photographers.

Another option is just getting the updated version of my point and shoot (DSC RX100iii or RX100iv), which is still the best compact camera ever, and has gotten a little more user friendly and now has WiFi so you can shoot the photos straight to your phone.

A third option is something in the middle, like a middle of the road mirrorless camera. It still has the interchangeable lens problems, but it's much less bulky, and being able to get different lenses could be good when he starts to play sports and stuff.

I also kind of need this to be user friendly for my wife, since she has zero photographic skills whatsoever. Even with my Sony, I can't impress upon her how to push the shutter halfway down to let it focus first, then take the picture. It's gotta have a quick autofocus and a decent "do-everything" automatic mode.

What does the benchwarmers hive mind have to say? I would prefer to spend less than a grand on whatever you guys dig up.
