'Nova Team Camp Report

Class of 2017
Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree, Neumann Goretti, PA
Ranked #108 in the Rivals 150 for his class and already verbally committed to Villanova, "DaDa" played well in a Saturday game at the Pavilion. With Marcus Littles manning the post and some of the Neumann-Goretti guards not in attendance (most notably, Quade Green), Cosby-Roundtree was able to show a little bit more of his face-up game than is the norm. He scored by pump-faking a mid-range jumper and then putting the ball on the deck and getting to the rim to hit a short floater. He also showed a jab-step and two-bounce dribble move that he used to score another bucket. He also scored around the rim and by getting to the free-throw line. As usual, he was active defensively and on the glass.

Class of 2018
Marcus Littles, Neumann Goretti, PA
This burly, front-courter is ranked #64 in his class and getting interest from Penn State. He plays AAU ball for Team Final in EYBL with Lonnie Walker and Dhamir Roundtree. He is a decent shooter out to 15 feet and willingly throws his body around in the paint. Littles probably lacks the lateral quickness to play the 5 in Villanova's defensive schemes but is a player worth keeping an eye on.

Jahvon Quinerly, Hudson Catholic, NJ
#31 in the Rivals Top 150. Offers from Rutgers, Xavier, California and Virginia. He is a smallish lead guard with good speed and court vision. His narrow frame is a little reminiscent of former Duke guard, Quinn Cook but he relies more on finesse to be effective than the toughness and moxie that were Cook's hallmarks. Good shooter and passer.

Luther Muhammad Hudson Catholic, NJ
#60 ranked, Muhammed has a lot of guard skills. He may not have elite quickness but he has a very solid handle, good court vision and passing skills, and the ability to shoot it out to three-point range. He should be able to develop into a quality, high-major combo guard. The most impressive plays he made today were three dribble-drive plays where he created for his teammates - finding a cutter for a lay-up through traffic on the first, a mid-range shooter on the second, and earning his team a wide-open, three-point opportunity on the third. Wouldn't be surprised if he ended up having more impact during his college career than his more highly-ranked teammate, Quinerly.

Louis King, Hudson Catholic NJ
Ranked #18 in his class and with offers from Syracuse, St. John's and Rutgers in hand, King is a high profile prospect. He has good perimeter skills for a player with his size and length. He can shoot it out to three-point range (though it at times is a bit of a push shot) or choose to attack the rim off the bounce. He is a good leaper capable of finishing on the business end of an alley-oop. In this game he made some questionable drives to the rack when the lane was far too congested.

Jalen Smith, Mount Saint Joseph, MD
Ranked #25 in his class, Smith has a Villanova offer and plays at the same school that produced Villanova guard, Phil Booth. He also holds offers from Marquette, Maryland, Miami and Providence. He earns every bit of his nickname, "Sticks" with his spindly frame and gangly running style. Very early in his game he showed impressive elevation and balance in canning an elbow jumper on which he was well above his defender. He finished inconsistently at the rim and struggled a little at the free throw line but he proved to be an active shot-blocker both on his own man and as a help defender. The raw tools are there but his ceiling will be determined by the degree to which he can either improve his perimeter skills to move away from the basket (where his lack of of strength is an issue) or put on the required size and strength to be able to play as a four man on the high major level.

Nate Laszewski, Mt. Hermon, MA,
Ranked #63 in his Class by Rivals, this four-star, 6-7 forward took an unofficial to Villanova during the team camp and his Coach reported that he picked up a 'Nova offer. He has interest from Duke, Iowa, Notre Dame, Virginia, Indiana, UNC and Wisconsin and offers from Princeton and Sacred Heart. He has a reputation as a dead-eye shooter and plays AAU with the NE Playaz.

Class of 2019
Bryan Antoine, Ranney Prep, NJ
Jay Wright was court-side at the Davis Center on Saturday to watch Antoine and Lewis in action for Ranney. For Villanova fans, a decent comparison in terms of body type for both Antoine and Scottie Lewis is probably John Celestand. Celestand was probably around 6-3 and 165 when he got to Villanova, with good length and quickness. Antoine and Lewis are both 6-4, 170 and have that rangy, prototypical basketball body for a wing player. Antoine has a very good handle and burst of speed that he can use quite efficiently to get to the basket. He is a good passer. Antoine has offers from Florida, Maryland, Notre Dame, Rutgers (as if), Seton Hall, St. John's, Temple and Villanova

Scottie Lewis, Ranney Prep, NJ
Lewis is an electric leaper who can score in transition and slashing to the basket from the wing. Aggressive off the bounce. Lewis has offers from Florida, Maryland, Notre Dame, Rutgers (as if), St. John's, and Villanova

Oral Commit: Julian Liaci, Nazareth, PA

Found out that Nova has gotten an oral commitment for Julian Liaci. Class of 2017. Plays at Nazareth HS in PA.

My brother has seen him plays and describes him as "FAST, really FAST".

He finished 6th in the PIAA AAAA 100M state championship and anchored the state champ 4x100M relay team in which he came from behind to walk down the team in the lead.

He could possibly run track too given his speed. Sounds like a good pickup for the FB team. Nazareth guys are traditionally tough kids.

Central Park Five

Documentary is on most streaming services these days.

Tragic story about corruption and unethical prosecutor's, similar to making of a murderer (but only one episode).

Ken Burns has the ability to make any story drag out. He could take last april's NFC game and turn that into a snooze fest, but the story is good enough to hold interest.

Anyway, the reason I am posting is moreso because of TRUMO's appearance. Calling for the death penalty for clearly innocent 15 and 16 year old children. Thoughts? Is this the guy we want to hand the keys to the nukes over to?

Who would you rather have - Marcus Paige or Jalen Brunson?

Since this is 'Nova Nation and he's one of our own probably 90% would say Jalen. So let me rephase the question - Who is better?
Now I know the book is closed on Marcus Paige and we have only read the first chapter on Jalen. Let's look at their stats. First, Marcus Paige.
*Frosh 2012 -2013 35g/29.2mpg/8.2ppg/2.7rpg/4.6apg/1.4spg/2.5tpg/35%FG/83%FT/34%3%
UNC went 12-6 in the ACC and 2-1 losing to Miami in ACC Finals. As a 8 seed they beat Villanova 78-71 then lost to Kansas 70-58 in the NCAA Tournament. They finished 25-11.
Soph 2013 - 2014 34g/35.6/17.5ppg/3.2rpg/4.2apg/1.5spg/2.1tpg/44%FG/87%FT/38%3%
UNC went 13-5 in the ACC and 0-1 losing to Pitt 80-75 in their Tournament. As a 6 seed they beat Providence 79-77 and then lost to Iowa State 85-83 in the NCAA Tournament. They finished 24-10.
JR 2014-2015 38g/33.2mpg/14.1ppg/2.9rpg/4.5apg/1.7spg/1.9tpg/41%FG/86%FT/39%3%

SR 2015 - 2016 34g/31.6mpg/12.6ppg/2.5rpg/3.8apg/1.1spg/1.2tpg/39%FG/77%FT/35%3%
UNC won the ACC at 14-4 and won their Tournament going 3-0 beating Virginia in the finals 61-57. As a 1 seed they beat Florida Gulf Coast 83-67 then Providence 85-66 then Indiana 101-86 then Notre Dame 88-74 then Syracuse 83-66 before losing to Villanova in the Finals 77-74. They finished the year at 33-7.

Now let's look at Jalen Brunson.
Frosh 2015-2016 40g/24.0mpg/9.6ppg/1.8rpg/2.5apg/0.7spg/1.8tpg/45%FG/77%FT/38%3%
Cats went 16-2 and 1st place in Big East. In their Tournament they went 2-1 losing to Seton Hall in the finals 69-67. As a 3 seed they beat UNC-Asheville 86-56 then Iowa 87-68 then Miami 92-69 then Kansas 64-59 then Oklahoma 95-51 and finally, UNC 77-74 for the Championship. They finished the season 35-5.

Marcus Paige came in as #22 in ESPN's Top 100 ranking and wasn't supposed to stay for 4 years.
Jalen Brunson came in as #16 in ESPN's Top 100 ranking and many thought he would be one and done.
Paige is a better defender than Brunson, a little taller (6-2 vs 6-1) and quicker. Brunson will never approach 30 minutes a game with his defensive shortcomings.Paige is a better rebounder and distribuitor of the ball but Brunson is a better shooter.Paige was the heart and soul of the UNC team and almost won the game for them. Now that Arch is graduated we will see what kind of leader Jalen will be.
Paige was drafted #55. Looks like Jalen will be here for 4 years and will he even get drafted?

Question for those who follow the NBA

I was just curious as to why an NBA team would select D. Bembry ahead of B. Bentil? Bentil can at least shoot and Bembry is average, at best. Bembry does other things well but in the St. Joe games that I watched, he wasn't that great a defender either. I'd rather have a player who does at least one thing well as opposed to a player that, because he doesn't do anything great, is considered "versatile". I just don't see Bembry ever making any impact but I guess time will tell. Am I missing something?

Here we go again

Seth Greenberg - there was no great team this year.

I am sorry all season long I heard how you are ultimately judged on the tourney and regular seasons don't matter. Well Nova won the Nat'l Champ and set all kinds of records in the process in the tournament. How does that not make them great.

It boggles my mind how does a guy who failed miserably as a coach become an expert?
